Bubble Day

MR COE (Ginninderra) (4.16): During May I attended some Bubble Day celebrations at a few schools in Belconnen. I was fortunate to be able to join students at Melba preschool, Weetangera primary school and the Cranleigh school. The month of May is Autism awareness month, and this year during the week of 18 to 22 May Autism Asperger ACT coordinated a number of activities to raise awareness and understanding of autism spectrum disorders.

I also welcome the money for Therapy ACT, which is part of the government's election commitment to provide eight speech therapists for four years. My only concern in this area is that over the years I have heard the previous ministers tell members of the estimates committee how difficult it is to find speech therapists. It is all very well to fund them, but we do actually need to fill those places to provide the services to people, especially children with autism spectrum disorder who are particularly in need.

Children-autistic(Question No 8)

Ms Hunter asked the Minister for Education and Training, upon notice, on 10 December 2008:

(1) What is the ACT Government doing to establish a training program in the ACT in specialist areas needed for autistic children, such as speech therapy.

(2) What professional training is there for specialists and teachers to ensure that professionals are being kept up-to-date.

Mr Barr: The answer to the member's question is as follows:

a group that is crying out for assistance and for early intervention

Also in relation to groups in the community which are particularly in need and where a little investment would particularly pay off over the long haul, there is our proposal for $1 million over four years to Autism Asperger ACT Inc. Here is a group that is crying out for assistance and for early intervention. All the literature, wherever you go in relation to autism and Aspergers, says that the earlier you diagnose the problem and the earlier you intervene, especially on a one-on-one basis, the better the outcome for the children will be.

Children—autism (Question No 1839)

Mrs Burke asked the Minister for Disability and Community Services, upon notice, on 12 February 2008:

What is the current number of children, by age and gender, diagnosed with autism in the ACT.

Ms Gallagher: The answer to the member's question is as follows:

(1) I cannot provide a complete answer to this question as the ACT does not hold a register of all people with this diagnosis. Residents of the ACT may be diagnosed by public or private paediatricians, psychiatrists or psychologists in the ACT, or through interstate services.
